prosciutto for breakfast

“You’re going to have leftovers for the rest of week!” One of my friends was looking at the aftermath of my Christmas party when she made this remark. I nodded, knowing she was right. I was going to have prosciutto for breakfast.

I had invited around fifteen friends (plus five neighbors who were strangers to me) and severely overestimated how much people would eat and drink. Plus, everyone was polite and brought along a bottle of wine. At this very moment, my fridge is well-stocked with several wines, beers, and cheeses. A good problem to have, I suppose.

Three hours before the guests were due to arrive, I took a nap on my couch. “When We Were Young” played gently in the background and I fell fast asleep. When I awoke, I realized I was about to do something I’d wanted to do for years: host a Christmas party in my own home. Suddenly, my dream was becoming a reality…in less then three hours!

David Brooks talked about the importance of living your values in his exceptional book, the Road to Character. I can’t remember the exact phrase, but he said there’s a certain level of harmony you achieve when you live the values that you profess to believe in. My Christmas party was both an excuse to gather friends together, as well as practice in “living out my values” in a tangible way.

Yes, I spent too much on food. Yes, I’ll have very chic leftovers all week. Yes, it was all worth it. That harmony David talks about is real.
