Exciting News
/For the most part I've enjoyed living in Iowa, but there's always been one caveat: I wanted to feel that I was contributing. This blog has been one way of contributing and the dinners were another. Both have given me a sense of purpose and place in the Midwest.
And now with this new opportunity, I'll have even more ways to contribute and that makes me excited. The team I'll be working with is so talented and I'll be hustling in the very heart of Downtown Des Moines. So what's going on? Well, starting next week, I'll be starting an internship at Des Moines Social Club.
DMSC is an arts-based community center where they host a variety of events (think culinary classes and slam poetry) aimed at educating the City. Every week there's a ton going on and the calendar can be overwhelming, but it's that creative diversity that's really pulled me in.
It was only a month ago that I was sitting in orientation for culinary school, but I'm glad I decided to not go. I think it would've been a good experience, but this feels like a better fit for me. Plus, it's not like I won't be learning. This internship is absolutely an education! I've always loved learning, but I don't think a classroom is the only place to do it.
I think Des Moines Social Club Is going to be an awesome place to serve and sharpen my talents. My initial interview really showed me that they operate "out of the box" - I brought in a portfolio of some of my work (blogs posts, the dinners) and they created an internship for me based on those past experiences. I had always hoped my work would speak for itself and maybe even create opportunities for me. At this point, it seems it has done just that! I'm really looking forward to seeing where this internship could lead.
Obviously, more to come. Stay tuned.
p.s. it kind of feels like the first day of school! Hence the photo below. I'm just missing a backpack :)
